3.5k European Council workers on strike

The staff members at the council, which is one the bloc’s key institutions, stopped work Tuesday to oppose member states attempt to curb the pay, pensions and promotions of EU civil servants.

Unions say their members face a 60 percent drop in purchasing power over the next 15 years if the EU keeps its harsh austerity policies.

In addition, the strikers are protesting against an increase in the retirement age from 63 to 67.

The EU has proposed a seven-billion cut for its civil servants in the upcoming 2014-2020 budget.

Meanwhile, the pay and other advantages for Europe’s 55,000 staff have frequently been a source of controversy with the latest claim by German newspaper Die Welt that 4,365 EU civil servants earn more than 21,000 euros a month.

The European Commission denied the claim, saying Brussels has a salary cap at 18,000 euros a month; this comes while employees receive additional advantages such as bonuses and child support of 400 euros for each child up until the age of 26.

Later this month, officials from the European Commission and the European Parliament may go on strike depending on a decision by staff unions.
