6.9-magnitude quake rocks SE Indonesia

According to Press TV quoting the US Geological Survey, the temblor hit 182 km northeast of Ende, the capital city of the Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara province, at a depth of 562 kilometer at 13:45 GMT on Friday.

Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said there was no threat of a tsunami.

Ende is home to 60,000 residents.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it is situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In 2004, a strong quake off the shores of Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in 13 countries around the Indian Ocean. Most of the deaths were in the northern Indonesian province of Aceh.

A 6.1-magnitude quake hit Aceh in July last year, leaving at least 30 people dead and thousands homeless.
