Former San Francisco Police Officer Jason Lai has been caught sending numerous racist text messages that talk about African Americans, “beaners” and “Indians” as being disgusting, barbarians, and “nig[s]”.
Lai also spoke disparagingly about gay officers using “coded language” and said that Native Americans, blacks and Hispanics are “all drug dealers”.
And what does Lai think about homeless people? He wrote: “Kill the bums.”
Lai resigned from the force in April, and his attorney claims that the texts he wrote do “not reflect who he is”; and besides, “there is no evidence he carried out any of those sentiments as an officer.”
Legal counsel for the officer claims that these texts “were seized from Lai’s personal phone and had been exchanged with some of his closest friends on the police force” so nothing that was said in these messages can be held against Lai.
What is most disturbing is that cops all across the country are becoming known for sending racist text messages to each other.
Last year 4 officers with the Fort. Lauderdale police department were investigated by internal affairs for “exchanging racist text messages between themselves and creating a video with racial bias.”
These cops were sending “text messages that included derogatory comments towards Hispanics and homosexuals” which included “images of President Barack Obama and fellow Fort Lauderdale Police officers.”
In that same year the Miami Beach Police department was surprised when 540 messages were sent by officers which resulted in the firing of the captain and an internal investigation.
Some of the messages called for playing “black Monopoly” and sending African Americans “to jail”, but they were also homophobic and sexist in nature as well.
In all 15 officers were under investigation for these emails and text messages that described racist views against the president and black people in general.
This problem extends to white supremacy, and comes full circle back to the San Francisco police department.
Between 2011 and 2012, these officers were sharing text messages “targeting blacks, Mexicans, Filipinos and gay men”. This was discovered during a federal investigation of a former sergeant Ian Furminger who was later convicted on corruption charges and is currently imprisoned.
The messages included KKK phrases such as “White Power” and suggested that “cross burning lowers blood pressure.”
When this story first broke in the news, it was reported that San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr had suspended 13 officers involved in sending racist and homophobic text messages.
Meanwhile in Ferguson, emails between a top municipal clerk and two high level police officers have been published revealing acceptable racism deep within the city’s government.
The Department of Justice (DoJ) discovered these emails during their investigation into the history of racism in the Ferguson Police Department.
Mary Ann Twitty, a now former city clerk, was caught in yet another scandal for emailing Ferguson Police Captain Rick Henke and former police sergeant William Mudd from 2008 to 2011; making jokes about Muslims, blacks and President Obama.
In 2001, Twitty sent Mudd and Henke images of former president Ronald Reagan feeding a baby monkey with the caption added: “Rare photo of Ronald Reagan babysitting Barack Obama in early 1962.”
Another email stated: “There’s a new Muslim clothing shop that opened in our shopping center, but they threw me out after I asked if I could look at some of the bomber jackets.”
An email forwarded by Mudd to Twitty inferred that aborted black babies are criminals. The email stated: “A black woman in New Orleans was admitted into the hospital [for] pregnancy termination. Two weeks later she received a heck for $5,000. She phoned the hospital to ask who it was from. The hospital said, ‘Crimestoppers’.”
In 2011, an email was haring featuring a photo a bare-chested African women with the added caption: “Michelle Obama’s High School Reunion”.
