Abbott dismisses revival of WorkChoices

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has dismissed as “absolute nonsense” suggestions a coalition government will reintroduce the contentious Work Choices industrial relations regime.

The government argues Mr Abbott’s use of terms like “flexibility and freedom for employers” is code for Work Choices.

Asked about reports the coalition is planning to revive individual workplace agreements, a key feature of Work Choices, Mr Abbott was dismissive.

“They’re absolute nonsense,” he told reporters in western Sydney on Thursday.

Labor overturned the Howard government laws following its election in late 2007, replacing them with the Fair Work Act.

Mr Abbott said the coalition was analysing how Fair Work laws were making it tougher for employers to hire staff.

“There is no doubt that the Fair Work took the pendulum from one side and swung it right back to the other side.”

Australian Greens MP Adam Bandt said his party would oppose any move to revive Work Choices.

“The only way Mr Abbott could revive Work Choices will be if Labor is willing to back it,” he said in a statement.

“Important employment rights, including holidays, penalty rates and sick leave, are all at risk from a return to Work Choices-type individual contracts.”
