African airline Fastjet enters domestic Mozambican market

nsnbc : Award-winning low-cost African airline Fastjet has announced that it will begin domestic flights in Mozambique soon. The airline, which currently operates in Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa will be the first low-cost pan-African carrier to enter the Mozambican market.

Fastjet_Mozambique_archivesFastjet made its announcement only a week after Ethiopian Airlines announced that it would enter the domestic Mozambican market. Fastjet is set to enter Mozambique in partnership with Solenta Aviation Mozambique, a division of its largest shareholder, Solenta Aviation, which is also its operational partner in the country.

Fastjet will make an announcement about routes and schedules soon, said the company. Commenting on the launch, Fastjet Chief Executive Nico Bezuidenhout said: “Mozambique is a very important market for Fastjet, and soon we will have the opportunity to offer flights between some of the main cities in the country on a daily basis, with affordable fares.” Fastjet’s aim had always been to make air travel more accessible to all, he said. “Fastjet is the airline for everyone.”

Fastjet’s Mozambican routes will use Embraer E145 50-seat jets, offering comfortable inter-city air travel. Naturally, budget carriers will have to save money somewhere and somehow.

What appears to be certain is that Fastjet doesn’t appear to cut corners when it comes to a safe jet. Of the 55 models analyzed by AirlineRatings.com as of 2013, the safest jets were deemed to be Boeing’s 777, 717, 787 and 767/757, the Airbus A380 and A340, the Embraer 135/145, and CRJ 700/1000 – none of which at that time had ever been involved in a fatal accident.

“We have flown more than 2.5 million people since our launch in 2012, and there is no better way to celebrate our fifth anniversary than to launch the Fastjet brand in Mozambique,” added Bezuidenhout. “As we grow in Mozambique, we plan to increase our fleet and introduce higher-capacity aircraft if demand moves in a positive direction.”

Fastjet is a multi-award winning low-cost African airline that began flight operations in Tanzania in November 2012, flying passengers from Dar es Salaam to just two domestic destinations – Kilimanjaro and Mwanza.

Today, Fastjet’s route network includes Tanzanian domestic routes from its Dar es Salaam base to Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, and Mwanza, and international routes from Tanzania to Lusaka (Zambia) and Harare (Zimbabwe). Fastjet also began flight operations from its Zimbabwe base in October 2015, and now flies domestically from Harare to Victoria Falls, Harare to Dar es Salaam and internationally from both Harare and Victoria Falls to Johannesburg (South Africa).

The airline has flown over 2.5 million passengers with an aggregate 94% on-time performance, establishing itself as one of the more punctual, reliable, and affordable low-cost carriers.
