Again, Egypt floods what once were Gaza lifelines

Days of Palestine, Gaza Strip –Egyptian army flooded this week the tunnels between Egypt and Gaza, following orders by Israeli occupation officials.

The Palestinian coastal enclave’s southern borders with Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula are completely sealed and the Rafah Crossing, which is the main terminal for 2 million Gazans to the world, is almost completely closed.

After the Israeli-led siege was put in place in 2006, the Palestinians in Gaza dug tunnels towards Egypt and used to smuggle their basic livelihoods through them.

Since August, 2013, when current crazy Egyptian President Abdul-Fattah al-Sisi carried out the military coup against the first-ever freely elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, his army has been strictly fighting the tunnels.

An Israeli minister clearly said on Saturday that Egypt flooded tunnels on its border with the besieged Gaza Strip at Tel-Aviv’s request.

Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, a member of the ruling Likud party, said that Egypt’s president “did flood a large part of the tunnels between Gaza and Sinai”, calling it a “good solution”.

“Let’s say that if Sisi did do it, it is to a large extent due to requests and pressure from us,” he said.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also recognised in September last year that he asked the Egyptian to flood the tunnels.

In late 2014, Egypt began setting up a buffer zone on its border with Gaza, and destroyed hundreds of tunnels it claims were used for smuggling weapons and other items.

In September 2015, Egypt installed huge water tubes and it has been using them to flood the remaining tunnels with Gaza.
