nsnbc : The French flag carrier Air France announced Saturday, that it will cancel all flights to and from Venezuela between Sunday and Tuesday. The decision was made against the backdrop of the controversial Constituent Assembly elections on Sunday and fears that violent clashes may erupt in the troubled country.
In a statement, Air France explained that the safety of passengers and staff is a priority. The statement was made on Saturday as Saturday’s flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport was still scheduled to depart, said an Air France spokesperson.
Violence during clashes between protesters and police / national guard, as well as between pro-socialist PSUV party and pro-Roundtable of Democratic Unity (MUD) protesters, claimed more than 100 lives on all sides since protests erupted in April.
On Sunday the socialist PSUV administration led mu President Nicolas Maduro scheduled to hold elections for a Constituent Assembly. The 545-seat legislature will have the power to rewrite the 1999 Constitution that was adopted under the late Hugo Chavez.
The PSUV claims the rewriting of the Constitution was necessary to “consolidate the achievements of the Bolivarian revolution”. Opponents, including the MUD coalition, trade unions, and even many PSUV members and members of parties and grassroots organizations that normally support the PSUV fear a constitutional coup and the consolidation of a tyrannical one-party-dominated state. The MUD, which holds an absolute majority in parliament will boycott the elections.
Earlier this year the PSUV-dominated Supreme Court suspended the legislative branch of government, usurped its powers, and claimed the National Assembly was in contempt. That is, the elections for the Constituent Assembly will be held while parliament is suspended and the judiciary functions as legislative branch as well.
