Our Declaration of independence said: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
Abraham Lincoln said: “Our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
We need to remind ourselves that “men” does not mean just “hommes” or “hombres,” but also “femmes” and “mujeres.” We must remember that “whites” are not the only ones who are created equal, but recognize that Blacks, Asians, and Native Americans are also in the equation.
On this Independence Day of the year 2021, we should consider that equality in being alive should mean that the advantages of living do not belong to a small group but to us all. Some are born with better brains, or better bodies, than others. Some are born into families of wealth, and others of poverty. Some of us shall stumble upon an invention of great value and others not. But these circumstances should not give the beneficiaries of chance a better life than are given to others. Yet the society we have fashioned is truly unequal, even though we proclaim that it is not. We should awaken to the truth and make it one of Love and Community, as we band together and travel on.
It is our unequal society that threatens us all with death and destruction. Those fortunate few who control us insist that their weapons of power remain dominant. Fossil fuels, therefore, continue to create climate change, throwing carbon into the atmosphere and bringing all life on our planet towards a sad and sorry end.
So let us end the inequality, once and for all. Let us cherish and preserve the wonders of the Earth, sharing them among everyone. Let us give mind to the future, and make it a future for us all.
If we can manage to remain alive and in a true civilization, within 100 years artificial intelligence and robotics will provide sustenance to all humanity. The need for individual wealth will disappear, as there shall be enough for all. In the meantime, we must remain vigilant and cooperate so our vast human number and practices shall not destroy the very land beneath our feet.
Our task going forward must be to learn how to preserve and protect our planet, making it fair and equal, so that all of us – men and women and children of all races and colors – shall not perish from the Earth.
