Americans demand stricter gun laws

About a 100 protesters holding candles and signs gathered in Washington on Friday morning after the Connecticut shooting spree that left 20 children and seven adults dead.

Protesters demanded immediate change and held signs reading “Today is the day.”

“Horrible things happen, we come out, we sing the songs, we light the candles, and everybody goes home,” said Barbara Elsas. “That’s no answer.”

“I think expressing the need for gun regulation is working on behalf of those families who have lost their loved ones today,” said Linda Finkel-Talvadkar, adding, “I think it’s a tribute to them that it must be talked about … because we can’t let this continue.”

The Connecticut school massacre came just two days after another shooting in a mall in Oregon, which killed three shoppers.

The US has experienced several mass killings this year including the Colorado cinema shooting in July, which left 12 dead and 59 injured and the August killing spree at a Sikh temple, which left seven dead.

Immediately after Barrack Obama’s re-election in November, gun sales skyrocketed with experts saying people are buying more weapons in fear of an economic doomsday.

According to a report by independent website Mother Jones, an estimated 300 million legal guns are owned in the US, not including the illegal ones.

A Gallup poll conducted in November 2011 showed 47 percent of American households own a gun.
