Americans’ pride in US hits lowest point since 2001: Gallup poll

Americans’ pride in the US is at its lowest point since 2001, with less than half saying they are “extremely proud” to be American, according to a nationwide survey.

The Gallup poll, released just before the Fourth of July independence holiday, found that while 70 percent of US adults overall say they are proud to be Americans, only 45 percent say they are “extremely” proud.

This marks the second consecutive year that this figure is below the majority level.

Democrats continue to lag far behind Republicans in expressing pride in the US, the survey found. The decline reflects plummeting pride among Democrats since US President Donald Trump took office.

According to the poll, of eight aspects of the US government, most people report being proud of the country’s scientific achievements. The US political system, as well as the country’s health and welfare system, garnered the least pride.

“US adults’ extreme pride in being American has been steadily weakening in recent years,” Gallup said.

“Since the start of George W. Bush’s second presidential term in 2005, fewer than 60% of Americans have expressed extreme pride in being American,” it said.

The latest overall declines in patriotism are largely driven by Democrats. whose self-reported pride has historically been lower and has fluctuated more than Republicans’. Independents have also historically been less proud of the US than Republicans have been

“Absent a significant national event that might rally all Americans around the flag, given Democrats’ entrenched views of the president, these historically low readings on American pride are likely to continue until Trump is no longer in office,” Gallup said in its analysis.
