It all started with an anonymous “former Facebook contractor” who happened to be a Republican and shared with the press stories about how the company’s algorithms that determine trending news have been tweaked toward a certain political bias.

The unidentified conservative contractor said Facebook “routinely suppressed news stories of interest to conservative readers.” In addition more people who remain nameless and faceless claimed that the social media giant tells employees to “inject” topics into the trending list while other stories would be “blacklisted”.

This contractor, said that Facebook had a tendency to remove “CPAC or Mitt Romney or Glenn Beck or popular conservative topics” from the trending section “because either the curator didn’t recognize the news topic or it was like they had a bias against Ted Cruz.”

More allegations include the conservative’s claim that he had experimented with the trending section, and topics such as allegations that former IRS official Lois Lerner improperly scrutinized conservative groups, and stories involving Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the Drudge Report and Chris Kyle, the former Navy SEAL who was killed three years ago were magically omitted.

In response to this allegation, Tom Stocky, vice president of search at Facebook, told the media that the company has “found no evidence that the anonymous allegations are true.”

Stocky went on to add: “Facebook does not allow or advise our reviewers to systematically discriminate against sources of any ideological origin and we’ve designed our tools to make that technically not feasible. At the same time, our reviewers’ actions are logged and reviewed, and violating our guidelines is a fireable offense.”

Facebook released a statement regarding the “allegations of bias” that reads in full: “We take allegations of bias very seriously. Facebook is a platform for people and perspectives from across the political spectrum. Trending Topics shows you the popular topics and hashtags that are being talked about on Facebook. There are rigorous guidelines in place for the review team to ensure consistency and neutrality. These guidelines do not permit the suppression of political perspectives. Nor do they permit the prioritization of one viewpoint over another or one news outlet over another. These guidelines do not prohibit any news outlet from appearing in Trending Topics.”
