Arizona Man Receives 25-Years Prison Sentence for Killing On-Duty K9 Officer Bane

Police officers are those people who care for our safety on a daily basis and are the first to respond when we find ourselves in trouble. This is true for the K9 officers, too.

Bane was one of those dogs who dedicate their life serving humans. Officers who had the pleasure to work with him describe him as loyal, intelligent, and brave. In fact, he possessed every trait a true officer should own.

Sadly, Bane lost his life during a chase in 2018.

When the officers with the Phoenix Police Department in Arizona were asked to intervene, Bane and his handler were the first to arrive at the scene.

Namely, after a long chase, one of the suspects barricaded himself in a nearby home and Bane was there to help catch the suspect, Jairo Adair Contreras Quinter, and bring him to custody.

When Bane’s handler who was outside the house heard the K9 officer breathing heavily he tried calling his name, but Bane didn’t respond.

Becoming aware something was very wrong, the officers entered the house and saw the suspect leaning on a cabinet. They realized Bane was inside that cabinet and Quintero, who was covered in bites, was trying to stop him from getting out.

Sadly, Bane was injured to the extent that he lost all his strength and couldn’t move even if he wanted to.

Next, the officers took Bane and rushed him to the nearest vet hospital, but it was too late for him to be saved.

The cause of death was asphyxiation, a state of being deprived of oxygen which can result in unconsciousness or fatal suffocation.

The loss of Bane affected his fellow officers. They mourned his death and hoped Quintero would be placed behind bars.

Thankfully, two years after the devastating incident, Quintero was brought to justice and was sentenced to 25 years and nine months in prison.

The other person involved in the chase made a plea deal with the prosecutor and only received a three-and-a-half-year sentence.

The department Bane was once part of held a memorial service. Fellow officers expressed their sadness over the loss of the K9 they all admired and appreciated so much. The story of Bane’s courage spread around the community and everyone was beyond grateful for his service and his sacrifice.

A local nursery donated a tree that was planted in Bane’s honor.

“There are those who were born to do this job,” a police officer said during the ceremony, as reported KTAR. “A good nose, a strong drive and bite, yet sociable as the modern police K-9 has become. Bane excelled in all these areas.”

Police Chief Jeri Williams spoke at the memorial service and urged everyone to stop the violence against police officers, including the members of the K9 units.

“We sent Bane in to do what the dogs do. They are our protectors, our partners…it’s definitely with heart that we lost Bane,” Willaims said. “Long story short, I need violence to stop from the community because this can’t continue to happen. The men and women out here in blue are only trying to do their jobs. They want to do it safely.”

During 2018, 28 K9 officers lost were killed, and the numbers are staggering.
