Astana peace process: Guarantors to hold Syria summit in Iran in 2022

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that Iran, Russia, and Turkey have agreed to hold the next Astana format summit in Tehran in February or March 2022, TASS news agency reports.

Special Assistant to Iran’s foreign minister for special political affairs Ali Asghar Khaji said this is dependent on the situation with coronavirus.

Delegations from Turkey, Russia, and Iran met yesterday in the Kazakhstan capital Nur Sultan for the 17th meeting of the Astana Peace process that aims to find a solution to the decade-long crisis in Syria.

Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon also took part in the talks as “observers”.

This upcoming Astana meeting in 2022 will be the final statement of guarantor states on the Syrian war.

On 1 July 2020, Russian, Iranian and Turkish leaders held an online summit dedicated to Syrian peace dialogue.

The Astana process, established in 2017 by Russia, Iran, and Turkey, is a rival to the UN-led peace process.
