At least 248 fatalities in earthquake, we are facing an emergency: Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto

nsnbc : Following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that rocked Mexico’s Puebla region and caused destruction and death even in Mexico City, 125 km from the epicenter, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, has addressed the Nation and said “We are facing an emergency”.

President Nieto_Mexico_Sept 19, 2017A deadly earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Mexico’s Puebla region on Tuesday at 13:14 local time (18:14 GMT). The epicenter was in Mexico’s Puebla region, about 55 km from the city of Puebla with a population of about 1,590,250, about 4.5 km from the town of Raboso with a population of 4,474, 7.2 km and about 125 km from the capital Mexico City.

Following an initial assessment Earthquake Report quoted Professor Max Wyss, who specialises in theoretical prognoses of injuries and fatalities, as expecting 500 to 5,000 injuries and 0 to 200 fatalities. The death toll is now at 248 and is expected to rise. It may, indeed, rise significantly as search and rescue teams are searching collapsed buildings and infrastructure and make way to rural regions.

President Niieto addressed the nation and said his administration was in full coordination with the civil services, with the Chief of Government of Mexico City, and the governors of the States of Mexico, Guerrero, Morelos and Puebla, the entities that suffered the most damages.

Mexico earthquake_Sep 19, 2017_1Nieto said the earthquake had caused severe damage to entities in the center and the south of the country. He also stressed that the disaster struck less than two weeks away from another major earthquake that hit the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca. Nieto said that he, upon being informed, called the National Emergency Center and ordered to immediately activate federal relief efforts. Thousands of members of the Army, Navy and Federal Police are assisting the population, he said.

Nieto stressed that the priority at this time is to continue the rescue of those still trapped and to provide medical care to the wounded. The emergency services of Social Security, ISSSTE, PEMEX, the Ministry of National Defense and the Secretariat of the Navy are available to anyone who requires care, whether or not they are entitled. Nieto said that sadly, several people have lost their lives, including women and children, in educational centers, buildings and homes. The death toll, reported as “at least 226″ by Wednesday morning at about 8:30 GMT) is likely to rise and may indeed rise significantly.

Nieto stressed that about 40 percent of Mexico City and about 60 percent of the State of Morelos had no electricity. Nieto said he had “reinforced” the Federal Electricity Commission to reestablish power as soon as possible. Also shelters have been opened to receive those who a re in need, he said. Nieto said people could check for services and shelters via Locatel of via social networks – and people can probably do that if they have electricity.

Mexico earthquake_Sep 19, 2017_2Nieto also stressed that it is important to facilitate the activities of emergency services. He stressed said that people, as far as possible, should remain in their homes, provided they are safe, and avoid congesting the streets where emergency vehicles need to be transited.

Nieto also thanked the thousands of citizens who have been using social networks to report damages property and people who need help. The President stressed that Civil Protection services are monitoring this information, so it is important to constantly update it. Nieto also urged citizens to be attentive to official information and recommendations that the government and services disseminate through social networks and the media.

Nieto, after expressing his admiration to all citizens, said that he had advised the members of the Cabinet that the aid to Chiapas and Oaxaca – struck by an earthquake a week ago – should not stop for one moment.

The earthquake occurred on a moderately dipping fault, striking either to the southeast, or to the northwest. At the location of this earthquake the Cocos plate converges with North America at a rate of approximately 76 mm/yr, in a northeast direction.

The Cocos plate begins its subduction beneath Central America at the Middle America Trench, about 300 km to the southwest of this earthquake. The location, depth, and normal-faulting mechanism of this earthquake indicate that it is likely an intraplate event, within the subducting Cocos slab, rather than on the shallower megathrust plate boundary interface. The video below – noted Earthquake Report – explains in art why the quake caused so much damage even in Mexico City, some 125 km from the epicenter.
