‘Attacks on Muslims rise in UK’

A British survey has revealed that attacks against Muslims are on the rise in the UK, with an average of two Islamophobic incidents reported daily.

The data compiled by academics at Teesside University found that victims reported 734 incidents, including online abuse, to the Tell Mama hotline, which records Islamophobic crimes, between last May and February 28, 2014.

The figure almost has a 20-percent increase compared to the same period the previous year, the report added.

The survey also revealed an apparent lack of trust in the British police to investigate Islamophobic attacks, as one in six victims chose not to report the incident to the authorities.

The Teesside report said the highest priority for British authorities should be to support victims and encourage them to come forward to report a hate crime.

“Alongside addressing under-reporting, authorities should be encouraged to disaggregate hate crimes by strand, and to take seriously the increased incidence of anti-Muslim hate crime,” the report read.

In addition, the data revealed that unlike most incidents of hate crime, which target mostly males, 54 percent of the victims of Islamophobia in the survey were female. According to the figures, four in five victims attacked in the street or elsewhere were females wearing visibly Muslim clothing.

Furthermore, other findings showed that a large number of the reported cases to the hotline involved a link to far-right groups such as the so-called English Defense League (EDL).

The release of the survey came just days after Nahid Almanea, a Saudi Arabian student, was stabbed to death in Essex, northeast of London. Investigators believe the June 19 killing was racially motivated as she wore Islamic clothing.
