MADELAINE Crawley’s tourmates say the backpacker “didn’t seem that drunk” and was “feeling fine” the night of an alcohol-fuelled Contiki bus tour party in Rome.

The 23-year-old from Tweed Heads went into cardiac arrest and died at San Pietro Hospital in the Italian capital on Thursday morning after a Contiki party at the Seven Hills campsite in the city’s north.

It is understood a second NSW woman was also taken to hospital to have her stomach pumped following the party. The 29-year-old was discharged from hospital yesterday.

While Italian police said the women allegedly consumed a toxic mix of drugs and alcohol at the party, that claim has been disputed and Ms Crawley’s parents, Graham and Heather, are waiting for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The 50-strong Contiki tour group she was with has moved on to Venice, but yesterday fellow travellers said Ms Crawley had been taking it easy.

“It was a massive night and everyone was paro, but she didn’t seem that drunk,” one backpacker said.
