A SYDNEY policewoman who was hit in the head repeatedly with a brick but returned to work after nearly two years of treatment and rehabilitation has received a medal for heroism.

Sergeant Samantha Barlow was on her way to work in Kings Cross, in the early hours of May 13, 2009, when a heroin addict savagely attacked her.

The mother of two sustained a shattered skull and spent 22 months undergoing extensive rehabilitation.

Against the odds, she returned to work in March this year.

In a tribute to her recovery, Sgt Barlow was awarded a medal for heroism today at a Pride of Australia ceremony at Government House in Sydney.

It came a week after she was given the Hellweg Bravery Award at the Australasian Council of Women in Policing Conference in Hobart.

NSW Police deputy commissioner of field operations, Nick Kaldas, said his colleague’s “strength of character” had been an inspiration to everyone.

“She has displayed incredible willpower throughout the ordeal and her subsequent recovery,” he said in a statement.

“The awards are well deserved and I congratulate her on all she has achieved.”

Sgt Barlow’s husband, Laurence Barlow, and their children, Lily and Ben, were present at the ceremony.

The family was devastated in May 2009 when heroin addict Roderick Holohan bashed Sgt Barlow twice in the face with a brick before hitting her twice on the back of the head while she was on the ground.

He then dragged her into a nearby park and stole $200.

Part of her skull was shattered during the attack, which also caused a broken nose, deep cuts and a crushed hand.

Holohan pleaded guilty to the attack and was sentenced to a minimum 11 and a half years in jail.

Sgt Barlow was nominated in May for the Pride of Australia award, sponsored by News Ltd, which recognises ordinary people who have done extraordinary deeds.
