President Lukashenko met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lithuania to Belarus Evaldas Ignatavicius whose diplomatic mission to Belarus is coming to an end.

Lukashenko said that he highly appreciates the Ambassador’s contribution to the strengthening of the Belarusian-Lithuanian relations.

Lukashenko pointed out that he meets with those outgoing ambassadors who “have made a great contribution to the development of the relations, worked to strengthen bilateral ties and have done a lot over their time in Belarus to bring the nations closer together.” He added that:

“It is also a fact that you are another ambassador who has been working for the benefit of Belarus and Lithuania. I consider you one of such ambassadors. I understand that you serve your country. You may pursue your own interests, and still you understand that Belarus is a neighboring state that is not a stranger to Lithuania.”

Lukashenko stressed that once Belarus and Lithuania were part of the same country and told the Ambassador: “You remember this, and this leaves a certain mark on us, probably even imposes an obligation.” The Belarusian President  emphasized:

“You have certain commitments towards your partners in the European Union, NATO and so on. You know about our situation. We also have obligations to our partners. Still, we have always been able to come to an agreement and find a path we are both ready to walk on together.”

The meeting took place one day before the start of the NATO Summit in Poland’s capital Warsaw. Tensions between Russia and NATO have gradually increased over the situation in Syria, in and around Ukraine, and a renewed arms race between NATO and Russia. Lithuania’s Baltic neighbors Estonia and Latvia as well as Poland will come to host a multinational NATO battalion on a rotational basis.

NATO, for its part, announced that NATO and Russian envoys will meet on July 13, after the NATO Summit, to discuss shared security concerns and the reviving of the NATO – Russia Council. Russian President Lukashenko, for his part, recently stressed that Belarus had succeeded at avoiding that Belarus was drawn into reckless political undertakings.
