CIS, Commonwealth of Independent States, Belarus, Vladimir Makai, 2018Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makai told reporters that Belarus and Russia tabled the draft statement at the meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council following the Council’s meeting on Friday, April 6.

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was established following the discontinuation of the Soviet Union (USSR). Makai said the parties did not abandon the idea of further cooperation within the CIS framework and decided to adjust the concept to new realities in the face of new challenges. Makai emphasized the importance of the draft statement against the dilution of the principle of non-intervention out forward by Belarus and Russia. He noted:

“Today some players are actively interfering in the internal affairs of several countries under plausible pretexts. Take a look at what has happened in the Middle East. This is the result of interference in the internal affairs.”

The statement emphasized the unacceptability of such approaches that force some stereotypes on those with totally different aspects of development. Chairman of the Executive Committee, Executive Secretary of the CIS Sergei Lebedev added that the meeting participants expressed unanimous opinion on the subject and the heads of the delegations agreed to work on every detail of the document.

Neither Makai nor any other of the foreign ministers at the CIS council meeting commented on the principle of non-intervention relative to Russia’s admitted, limited military intervention in Crimea and the presence of “Russian contractors” in the “rebelling” Donbas region of Ukraine.
