The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the First Lady Michelle Obama have announced new alterations to the federal requirements for nutrition labels.

Since 1996, these labels have remained the same, while also being the “leading source of information regarding calories, fat and other nutrients.”

Robert Califf, commissioner for the FDA said: “The updated label makes improvements to this valuable resource so consumers can make more informed food choices – one of the most important steps a person can take to reduce the risk of heart disease and obesity.”

Among the changes, the FDA insisted:

• Updates for caloric intake and servings sizes
• Declaration of added sugars
• Difference between “per serving” and “per package”
• Updates on vitamin and nutrient intake
• Declaration of “calories from fat”

In response to these changes, lobbyists representing Big Food came out to challenge the FDA.

A consortium of associations such as:

• American Bakers Association
• American Beverage Association
• Corn Refiners Association
• International Dairy Food Association
• National Confectioners Association

The organization said they were “disappointed by the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ruling to require an ‘added sugars’ declaration and daily reference value (DRV) on the Nutrition Facts Label (NFL).”

Big Food asserted that revealing how many hidden sugars were in processed foods and teaching consumers how much sugar should be consumed daily would adversely impact their business.

Martin Binks, professor of nutrition for Texas Tech University, added : “This is clearly a positive thing, don’t get me wrong. Surely it would be better if the population ate a little less sugar. But I think we’ve grown myopically focused on added sugar as a magic culprit, like if we just cut that from our diet we’ll all be healthy.”
