nsnbc : Colombian security forces have confiscated 12 metric tons of cocaine in the country’s biggest drug bust ever, said President Juan Manuel Santos on Wednesday. The drug bust happened in four farms in Colombia’s Uraba region, known to be home to the right-wing paramilitary Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC) also known as Los Urabenos or the Gulf Clan.

President Juan Manuel Santos commented on the record-bust at a police base, saying “Thanks to a police operation with overseas intelligence, from friendly countries, the largest seizure in history was made.” Santos asserted that the drugs belonged to the AGC also known as Los Urabenos or “The Guld Clan” as Colombian as Colombian authorities prefer to designate them. Police said that four people were arrested in the operations.
Santos added that police have seized more than 316 tons of cocaine so far this year. In 2016, authorities confiscated 360 tons of cocaine. The United Nations had criticized Colombia for producing more cocaine than ever before. The right-wing neo-paramilitary AGC which the government prefers to designate as non-political bare criminals, stand for an estimated 60 – 80 percent of all cocaine export from Colombia. Ironically western media often described the now demobilized FARC-EP as the biggest exporter while a more realistic assessment is at the FARC imposed a 10 percent tax on cocaine trafficked through FARC-EP controlled territory.
The United Nations reported that Colombian coca farmers grew enough coca to produce more than 850 tons of cocaine in 2016. The Colombian government began a new strategy earlier this year that seeks to curb the phenomenon by investing in coca-growing regions that have long suffered government neglect and state abandonment. The government also offers subsidies in a crop substitution program that is part of the peace accord with the FARC.
The administration of President Santos aims to legalize coca plantations of up to 300 hectares to free police and other resources to go after industrial-scale coca production and trafficking. It must be noted that coca has been part of Andean culture for centuries, if not millennia, and that the occasional recreational use of cocaine – like it or not – is very much part of contemporary Colombian culture.
