WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Democratic Party’s platform drafting committee tussled over whether to use the word “occupation” in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian issue, reflecting divisions between the Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton camps that could play out at the convention.

The Democratic National Committee held two days of open hearings this week in Washington, D.C., on the platform, inviting experts to testify. The hearings, which will also take place in other cities, got underway the same week that it became clear that Clinton had secured her position as the party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

Much of the back and forth Thursday afternoon, when the committee considered foreign policy, was about whether the committee should describe Israel’s presence in the West Bank as an “occupation.”

Turkey has criticized Washington over its active support of the Kurdish fighting force in Syria, branding the People’s Protection Units (YPG) as terrorists despite their latest successful advances on ISIS jihadists’ positions. TrendsSyria unrest, Syria-Turkey

The US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), launched an offensive at the end of May to capture the last segment of the Turkish-Syrian border still under Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) control and surrounded the city of Manbij on Friday. The US-supported coalition forces also continue to recapture settlements in the vicinity of IS stronghold of Raqqa on the north bank of the Euphrates River.

Sweden seems to have censored a brewing lesbian romance between two main characters in an episode of popular Cartoon Network show Steven Universe, leading its residents to launch a petition urging CN to take appropriate action.

Steven Universe, which premiered in 2013 in the US on Cartoon Network, revolves around the fictional Beach City where a boy called Steven hangs out – occasionally helping to save the world – with his friends, who are actually “Crystal Gems”: Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and others. The interesting thing about the gems is that they can fuse to create more powerful characters. Garnet is a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire, both female gems who are very much in love with one another.

The Swedish-dubbed version of the show’s episode ‘Hit the Diamond’ about a baseball match has been altered to mute the romantic tension between Ruby and Sapphire.

For instance, this particular conversation:

The Israeli Army has barred all Palestinians from entering Israel, except for “medical and humanitarian cases.” It comes after strict measures were already taken following a fatal Tel Aviv attack.

An army spokeswoman told AFP that the border closure will last until midnight Sunday.

The UN has stated that the Israel’s step may amount to collective punishment, which is prohibited under international law, and will “only increase the sense of injustice and frustration felt by Palestinians,” spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a news briefing, as quoted by Reuters.

AP — An opinion poll of attitudes inside Egypt and Saudi Arabia conducted by Israel’s Interdisciplinary Center found virtually no support for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in the two Arab countries.

The survey could signal trouble for Trump if he wins the November election and sets out to devise a Mideast policy. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are two of America’s most powerful and important allies in the Arab world.

When asked who their preferred candidate was, just 3.8 percent of Egyptian respondents chose Trump. In Saudi Arabia, only 6% favored Trump.

The presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, did better, though support was far from overwhelming. In Egypt, 35.7% of respondents chose Clinton, while in Saudi Arabia that number was 30.2%.

(JTA) — Several French Jewish organizations condemned a former chief rabbi of France, who called Tel Aviv’s gay pride parade an “abomination” and “attempt at moral extermination of the People of Israel.”

Joseph Sitruk, who had served as France’s chief rabbi from 1987 until 2008, made the statements last week, during a talk broadcast on Radio J, the Actualite Juive weekly reported.

“The Torah determines that homosexuality is an abomination and considers it a human failure. The danger seems to me grave enough for everyone to shout their opposition in the face of such an offense,” said Sitruk on June 3, as tens of thousands marched through Tel Aviv in its 23rd annual gay pride event. “I hope the listeners will react in a radical manner to this abomination,” Sitruk said.

(JTA) — A Fox Sports sideline reporter has been fired for making racist and anti-Semitic comments on a live Facebook broadcast Thursday.

In the broadcast Thursday on Barstool Sports’ Facebook Live, Emily Austen, 27, said Jewish people are stingy and expressed surprise that a Mexican immigrant was a high school valedictorian, because, “I didn’t even know Mexicans were that smart.” She also made a stereotypical remark about Chinese-Americans.

Citing an unnamed source with the Tampa Bay Rays, which Austen covers, Business Insider reported Friday that Austen had been fired for the comments and will not appear on any future game broadcasts.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — One of the many lawsuits alleging underpayment by Donald Trump is from workers who say they were denied overtime during a Passover event.

Trump Miami Resort Management LLC last month settled with 48 workers who said they did not receive overtime during a 10-day Passover event at the Trump National Doral Miami, USA Today reported Thursday.

Settlements ranged between $800 to $3,000 per worker, with some saying they put in 20-hour days.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promptly finished his visit to the US and will skip the final farewell to legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, amid reports that he had been refused permission to deliver a speech at the funeral and had been prevented from undertaking some religious rituals.

Erdogan attended a Muslim funeral for the boxer on Thursday and was expected to attend the final ceremony on Friday in Louisville, Kentucky, alongside other world leaders. But his office said that he left the US late on Thursday without giving any explanation, according to Reuters.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Muhammad Ali made his final journey through his hometown Friday — past the little pink house where he grew up and the museum that bears his name — as thousands of mourners along the route pumped their fists and chanted, “Ali! Ali!” for the former heavyweight champion of the world known simply as The Greatest.

A hearse bearing Ali’s cherry-red casket, draped in an Islamic tapestry, arrived at Louisville’s Cave Hill Cemetery in a long line of black limousines after a 19-mile drive via Muhammad Ali Boulevard that was both somber and exuberant.

“He stood up for himself and for us, even when it wasn’t popular,” said Ashia Powell, waiting at a railing for the hearse to pass by on an interstate highway below.

Ali was to be laid to rest around midday — his headstone inscribed simply “Ali” — in a private graveside ceremony, followed in the afternoon by a grand memorial service attended by more than 15,000 people, including former President Bill Clinton and comedian Billy Crystal.

Ali, the most magnetic and controversial athlete of the 20th century, died last Friday at 74 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Greek legislators from the ruling Syriza political party have told members of Palestinian political parties that Athens intends to officially recognize the State of Palestine.

During a Saturday meeting between a Greek parliamentary delegation from the Syriza Party and political parties of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, the Greek lawmakers confirmed that the government in Athens would “soon” recognize the State of Palestine, according to a PLC statement cited in a report by Ma’an News Agency.

However, a precise timetable for the official recognition was not specified by the visiting Greek lawmakers.

The parliament in Greece voted last December in favor of a motion to recommend that the government recognize the Palestinian State.

The voting took place during a special parliamentary session attended by Acting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Despite the vote, the actual recognition has not yet materialized.

“Due to some special circumstances, the Greek recognition of the Palestinian state has been delayed, but it will come soon,” the PLC statement quoted the visiting delegates as saying.

If implemented, Greece would become the second European nation to officially recognize the State of Palestine, following Sweden’s 2014 official recognition of the state.

During their visit, the Greek lawmakers met with Fatah movement’s Azzam al-Ahmad, Qays Abdul Karim of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Mustafa Barghouti of the Palestinian National Initiative, Bassam al-Salihi of the Palestinian People’s Party, and the Fatah-affiliated MPs Najat al-Astal, Muhib Awwad, and Abdullah Abdullah.
