Black Saturday class action against Powercor begins

Plaintiffs lead by a farmer from Drung Drung, a small community east of Horsham, are suing electricity supplier Powercor in a class action which alleges the company was negligent in the maintenance of powerlines, directly contributing to the ignition of bushfires in February 2009, part of what became known as the 2009 Black Saturday fires.

The trial is expected to last six weeks, with robust argument expected from either side’s list of professional witnesses over the exact cause of the bushfires.

One of the major points of discussion will be over the changes to the maintenance cycle powerlines in the area, with the plaintiffs arguing this contributed to a lack of surveillance of potential fire hazards from ageing powerlines and fixtures on power poles.

Powercor has refuted all allegations of negligence and has stated it has met all rules set out by the State’s regulator.

The case continues at the Horsham Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
