Approximately every two seconds, some needs blood in the United States. There are a total of required 36,000 units of red blood cells. However, there is a great number of Americans who do not exactly know whether their blood type is A, B, AB, or O.
A study was conducted at the Third Military Medical University in China where they utilized a paper strip test that will help confirm one’s blood type in as little as 30 seconds or less!
The team at the Third Military Medical University in China said: “Blood type matching is important for pregnancy, blood transfusion, and bone marrow transplantation.”
Basically, a conventional blood typing takes about 10-20 minutes maybe more, which will require the use of a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins blood and separates them into various components. Currently, the Chinese experts used a common dye, bromocresol green that chemically reacts with blood to ascertain ones blood type easily.
The paper test works by watching the antigens – proteins that are situated on the external part of the red blood cells, and antibodies, and proteins produced by the body to ward off foreign intruders in the blood using a device that resembles the thermometer. Those with type A blood contain red blood cells with A antigens; B with B antigens; AB with both; and O with neither. A blood type is determined to be “positive” or “negative” if a separate D antigen is present.
The color change comes around for a total of 30 seconds or so. But, for very blood types, such as U- Fy (a-b-); RzRz; Jk (a-b-); Di (b-); Dr (a-); Kpb-); and Vel-, this would under 2 minutes. This is still way faster than the conventional blood typing test. The study, conducted on 3,550 human blood samples, had a 99.9% percent accuracy rate.
Knowing your blood type will enable hospitals to obtain the blood you actually need fast, however for those with very rare blood types, it may take several hours to a day to find out.
It is important that you know your blood type as it will help prevent a wrong blood type transfusion which can prove fatal in most instances.
