Bt cotton killing Indian farmers while Monsanto profits from seed imperialism and deadly poisons

(NaturalNews) Agricultural violence is running rampant in India, harming both the physical and financial health of its farmers. As it happens, Monsanto and the government simply sit back and continue to relish in the profit that comes from genetically modified seeds and poisons such as glyphosate.

People are dying? No big deal. Their agriculture is crumbling? Whatever.

It’s a horrible mentality, but unfortunately it’s common among greedy folks who don’t care about others as long as their own world is wrapped up in the security of the almighty dollar… and lots of them.

However, people around the world are tired of Monsanto’s games, GMOs, the use of pesticides, government inaction and the lies that attempt to justify such atrocities. Even when the World Health Organization called glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup, “probably carcinogenic to humans,” Monsanto continues to deny its harms. Sure, the cancer-causing chemical destroys the body and has been found in the urine and blood samples of those who are regularly exposed to it, such as the farming community, but money talks and chemical violence continues to be unleashed.

Indian farmers certainly fall into this we’ve-had-enough category, having witnessed firsthand the devastation of their crops and their people. Their once-flourishing cotton crops have not produced as they used to, and the problem is exacerbated by the insistence of turning to Bt cotton to supposedly save the day. Not so. They’ve learned the hard way that the genetically modified cotton variety hasn’t been effective in warding off cotton-destructing pests. Distraught at the loss of their crops, many Indian farmers are committing suicide.

What is the government doing to help compensate them? Nothing.

Hardev Singh Sandhu, the president of the Kirti Kisan Union, which is involved in supporting farmers’ rights in the country, suggests that if action isn’t taken that makes the farmer’s crops and their lives a priority, social unrest could be on the horizon.

“We have been suffering because of the Badal government’s misrule and not due to a natural calamity,” he says. He says that for more than a year and a half, the government has failed to compensate them for their losses as they should per the Compensation Guarantee Act. The Act maintains that farmers whose crops were damaged should be paid for their losses. Instead, Sandhu points out that the government there “keeps dilly-dallying on giving farmers relief.”

He also questions why Bt seeds are banned in many countries, yet they have been sold in India without the same safety and effectiveness checks.

Sandhu says that suicides in the cotton belt are increasing at alarming rates while the government “keeps dilly-dallying on giving farmers relief.” He insists that they’re permitted to start using traditional growing methods, stating that Bt seeds should be banned.

Meanwhile, many countries around the world are experiencing what Sandhu so desperately hopes for in India: the banning of GMO agriculture. European nations in particular are leading the world when it comes to this effort. Just recently, Italy and Austria have joined the ranks of other like-minded countries that are allowed to choose not to involve themselves in the growth of GM crops. They join numerous other areas who follow this logical path including Poland, Slovenia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Wales and Germany.

What’s the holdup in India?
