Bus drivers warn of Olympic strike

The Unite union, Britain’s largest trade union, demanded a £500 payment to recognise the “massive increase” in London bus drivers’ workload saying 800,000 more passengers are expected to travel on buses during the Olympics.

Unite official Peter Kavanagh said bus drivers were “the only London transport workers” who are not offered bonus payments for their extra work.

Kavanagh called on London’s newly re-elected mayor, Boris Johnson, to negotiate with bus companies in order to remove the threat of industrial action during the Olympics.

“If bus workers take strike action in the run-up to and during the Olympics it will be because Boris Johnson and the bus companies failed in their duty to London”, said Kavanagh.

The threat of strike action by London bus drivers comes as union leaders in Britain have warned that strikes by public servants over the British government’s changes to pays and pensions will continue for the rest of the year.

According to trade unions in Britain, over 400,000 public sector workers went on a UK-wide strike on Thursday 10 May. London’s Metropolitan Police also reported that around 32,000 off-duty police officers joined the strike marching through London.
