Can Pineapple Juice Offer Cough Relief?

Next Story

Many natural remedies, which have been around for decades, if not centuries, to common ailments are gaining popularity once more, as people are seeking natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals.

With fewer risks and more health benefits, it’s easy to see why people are choosing plants over costly drugs that come with long lists of side effects. We’ve covered many natural remedies that can do anything from reducing bloating/gas and whitening your teeth to treating achy joints and upset stomachs, and encourage you to explore them the next time you need relief.

Now a new remedy has emerged, inspired by a 2010 review by researchers from the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology in India. They demonstrate that pineapple juice, when combined with pepper and a dash of salt and honey, can be “extremely helpful in dissolving mucus of the lungs in tuberculosis” when administered to patients once per day.

They also experimented with other remedies, like 50ml of concentrated garlic syrup administered twice per day to kill fungi, and mint juice to “cleanse the body of all the anti-tuberculosis drug side effects.” More research is required in order to determine whether or not this is an effective longterm alternative to treating tuberculosis and other mucus building illnesses and diseases.

Pineapple itself carries many healing properties that further suggest it can reduce cough symptoms. Because pineapples carry the enzyme bromelain, they have been demonstrated to show anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and can be used to reduce swelling, especially of the nose and sinuses, after surgery or injury. A key ingredient in many digestive enzyme formulations, bromelain also helps with digestion. It may also relieve respiratory problems such as asthma and, because it contains high levels of vitamin C,  supports both the immune system and eyesight.

It seems safe to say that incorporating pineapple juice into your diet, particularly when you’re sick, is a good idea.
