Canadian Twitter star sells script to Hollywood

A mother of three and 34-year housewife from Alberta, Canada, Kelly Oxford, whose social media posts and tweets have gathered 350,000 followers, is switching to long-form formats, selling a screenplay to Hollywood and landing a book deal.

Her followers on Twitter (@kellyoxford) include film critic Roger Ebert, American TV talk show host Jimmy Fallon, screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult), and singer/songwriter John Mayer, reports the Los Angeles Times.

For the last three years Oxford has written her wry and witty views of life and celebrities in 140-character punchlines on Twitter, such as: “Enrolling your daughter in Gymnastics: 1% chance she’ll be an athlete. 100% chance she’ll be the drunk girl doing backflips in a bikini.”

Last fall, NBC hired Oxford to write a pilot and next April Harper Collins will release her first book of essays, Everything’s Perfect When You’re a Liar.

Also, Warner Bros bought her first screenplay, Son of a Bitch, a somewhat autobiographic tale of a young pot-smoking woman who must juggle new motherhood with her online fans.

Oxford developed her humorous voice in online chat rooms, Facebook, blogs and Twitter after becoming a stay-at-home mom, posting her stories and observations daily. Gradually she had thousands reading her wit and wisdom.

Oxford credits the success of Kristen Wiig‘s Bridesmaids as opening the door to her style of comedy writing. “I never would have thought to pitch an R-rated girl-centric movie because I knew the odds of it going were pretty slim,” she told the LA Times. “But all of a sudden there is a market for this — the outspoken women.”

Her commentary on celebrities grew from reading their posts on Twitter, which she credits with creating a level playing field. Now they read her as she’s developed her own celebrity.

Oxford had previously visited Los Angeles with dreams of making it in Hollywood, but after a 12-year career online, she is ready to leave Canada and try out California.
