Chicago Public Schools Take Drastic Measure to Protect Students From Trump

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has given their principals an order : Do not allow federal immigration agents into our schools without a criminal warrant.

Under Donald Trump, ICE agents do not have to limit their enforcement actions while at “sensitive locations” such as schools which allows agents to now apprehend anyone outside or inside “designated areas” with or without serving the target with a subpoena.

So far whether Donald Trump’s sweeping mass deportation efforts will find its way to public schools is yet to be seen; however the 3rd largest school system in the US is not taking chances with the safety of their students.

In order to protect those who may be living in the US illegally, and the nearly 381,000 Hispanic students, there is a growing concern that while the parents are taken for deportation, their children will be hunted down at school.

Janice Jackson, chief education officer for CPS, told parents to not only make sure immigration officers remain outside the schools, but instructed faculty to refrain from divulging information about the students to immigration agents; as well as make plans for students whose parents are taken.

Jackson wrote: “If presented with any paperwork from ICE, please call the Law Department before taking any action. ICE agents should wait outside while the school is reviewing the matter with the Law Department. To be very clear, CPS does not provide assistance to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the enforcement of federal civil immigration law.”

Over the past week, John Kelly, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) signed off on a leaked memo that explains how millions living in the US have been identified for deportation, including arrests made at traffic stops and other routine law enforcement encounters.

Any minor offense such as shoplifting or just the fact of being suspected of a crime could result in detention and removal.
