India’s Ministry of External Affairs, on Monday, stated that “Expeditious disengagement of border personnel at the face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to and is ongoing”. “In recent weeks, India and China have maintained diplomatic communication in respect of the incident at Doklam. During these communications, we were able to express our views and convey our concerns and interests,” the Ministry stated.

China’s Xinhua State news agency, for its part, reported “India had withdrawn its personnel and equipment and Chinese personnel verified this at the scene. China will continue to exercise its sovereign rights and preserve its territorial sovereignty in accordance with historical border agreements.” Both sides accused each other of violating the disputed border. The standoff laster 71 days and has led to what some would describe as “bizarre” situations.

In one incident where Chinese troops, according to local sources, had crossed into Indian territory, Chinese and Indian soldiers started throwing rocks at each other until officers from both sides intervened to end the “stone age war”. Troops from both sides then displayed banners and shouted slogans at each other before everyone withdrew to their original positions. The incident prompted some cynics to ask whether t would be a good idea to rename the BRICS to “the bricks”, as in rocks.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi-Jinping are expected to meet in the city of Xiamen, South China later this week along with political leaders from Brazil, Russia, and South Africa for the BRICS summit where they are likely to discuss the situation.
