nsnbc : Colombia’s FARC changed their name from Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP) to Revolutionary Alternative Forces of Colombia, keeping the internationally known acronym when it begins working as a legal non-militant political party next month.

The now demobilized and disarmed former guerrilla stated Tuesday that the name of their political party that starts working in September will be Fuerzas Alternativas de Colombia or FARC.
FARC leader Luciano Martin a.k.a. Ivan Marquez explained that the FARC does not want to break the ties to its past – as a revolutionary part and movement.
Luciano Marin, for his part said that the FARC has been and will continue to be a revolutionary organization, a voice for those who have been excluded, a voice for those without a voice (representation) and the voice of the honest and good people of Colombia.
The Revolutionary Alternative Forces of Colombia (FARC) will be given 10 seats in Congress for two electoral periods before it will have to compete with other parties on equal terms.
The granting of the seats for a transitional period has been stipulated in the peace accord between the State and the FARC-EP that ended 52 years or armed conflict between the guerrilla and the State.
The FARC / FARC-EP was founded in 1964 by a group of Marxist peasants from central Colombia. The decision to establish the guerrilla came after President Guillermo Leon Valencia ordered a military attack on the leftist enclave.
