Concerns over rooftop solar panels in WA

A high number of rooftop solar panels on West Australian homes have installation defects and could pose a fire risk, a survey by the state’s energy safety watchdog has found.

In an inspection of 260 solar systems ordered by EnergySafety, half were found to have been installed incorrectly and had at least one defect.

Western Power and Horizon Power inspectors found that 12 per cent had incorrect wiring that could pose a fire hazard.

Another 11 per cent of installations had defects that could pose a future safety risk if not rectified, while 27 per cent did not comply with requirements to safely label devices.

EnergySafety Director Ken Bowron said on Friday the defects were subject to orders to make them safe and follow-up inspections were carried out to ensure they had been fixed.

“It is vital that the rapidly expanding solar industry lift its performance and maintain the highest safety standards now and into the future to protect owners and their property.”

Mr Bowron said inspections would be stepped up to ensure compliance with the law.

Only licensed electrical contractors may perform solar installations and householders should receive an Electrical Safety Certificate stating their system is completely safe.

EnergySafety said property owners concerned about their solar systems should contact the installer and the appropriate network operator, Western Power or Horizon Power.

The head of the Sustainable Energy Association, Ray Wills, said the problems needed to be rectified, but criticised the timing of the report’s release because the survey had started in June.

“To release it on December 23, the day before just about every business in the state is going to shut down, it’s very poor advice, very poorly timed,” he told ABC Radio.

EnergySafety says 10,000 solar systems have been installed in WA homes in the second half of 2011.
