Court drops Berlusconi corruption case

The court in Milan read out its verdict on the case in Berlusconi’s absent on Saturday after about two hours of deliberation.

Prosecutors had requested a five-year jail sentence for Berlusconi, who was accused of having paid his former British lawyer David Mills USD 600,000 in the 1990’s to lie in court to protect his business interests.

Berlusconi is on trial separately on charges of tax fraud and sex with an underage prostitute.

Berlusconi lawyers successfully argued that the bribery case must be dismissed, because the statute of limitations on the case was expired as it ran for too long.

The usual maximum time for a case to be concluded in Italy is 10 years, but the clock was stopped for Berlusconi while he was prime minister for having legal immunity.

Mills, who is the husband of former British cabinet minister, Tessa Jowell, was convicted of perjury in absentia in February 2009.

However, a year later, he was acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court under the statute of limitations.

Berlusconi was convicted three times in 1997 and 1998 for corruption, false accounting and illicit financing of a political party. But the convictions were all either overturned on appeal or expired under the Italian statute of limitations.

The former prime minister dominated the Italian politics for 17 years until he announced his resignation on November 8, after coming under immense pressure to step down over a series of scandals and for mishandling the country’s economy.
