Cuba Begins Vaccinating Toddlers

The impoverished island of Cuba has begun distributing Covid-19 jabs to children as young as 2.

The vaccination campaign targeting children aged 2 to 11 began Friday, with the communist nation using two recombinant vaccines, Abdala and Soberana, which haven’t been approved by the World Health Organization.

On Saturday, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez announced Soberana had received emergency use authorization by the government, and thanked children who participated in test trials.

“The future is vaccinated, with the authorization by @cubacecmed emergency use of #Soberana02 , in ages between 2 and 18 years. Thanks to the kids and teens who put their shoulders up for the test.#Cuba You will also win this battle for life,” Canel Bermúdez tweeted.

“The Cuban vaccines, the first developed in Latin America, have not undergone international, scientific peer review,” reports the Daily Mail.

Cuba’s government rushed to get Soberana distributed to youngsters amid upcoming plans to re-open schools since closing them in March 2020, when in-person teaching switched to TV learning.
