Daily Briefing Apr. 20 – Did you blink? Likud may have lost its coalition chance

Welcome to The Times of Israel’s Daily Briefing: Your 15-minute audio update on what’s happening in Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday.

Today’s panel comprises editor David Horovitz and political correspondent Tal Schneider, along with host Amanda Borschel-Dan.

Seemingly overnight, the tide has potentially turned for Likud’s chances of forming a coalition under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Schneider explains how Monday’s vote over control of the usually minor Knesset Arrangements Committee could signal a tidal wave, though she cautions that there may yet be plenty of twists and turns ahead.

Among the catalysts behind Monday’s vote is Ra’am head Mansour Abbas, who eschews closed-door dealing and is no longer willing to be the “mistress” of mainstream political parties, says Schneider.

The United States is cracking down on Israeli binary options fraud, now taking on the key company at the heart of the massive global scam that flourished here for a decade. Horovitz explains the impetus to a years-long campaign spearheaded by The Times of Israel that raised awareness and led to the outlawing of the entire industry in Israel, but has yet to see a single prosecution here.

And finally, citizen Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial is catching headlines with the lengthy testimony of former Walla news CEO Ilan Yeshua. Why is his testimony so remarkable?
