Dead women were from same suburb: police

The bodies of two women from the same suburb have been found dumped in Melbourne streets in as many days – but police say there’s no evidence of any link between them.

The body of a woman in her 60s was found wrapped in a blanket and dumped at Lorimer Street, in an industrial area of Port Melbourne on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman has been identified and her cause of death determined but police are unable to release the details until her next-of-kin have been notified.

On Monday, the body of 24-year-old Karina Ann Bell was discovered in a laneway in Caulfield South, around 12km from Port Melbourne.

Both women were from the inner city Melbourne suburb of Southbank.

And both women were killed elsewhere before being dumped on the street, said Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter.

He said Ms Bell was “most probably” dumped in the laneway after being killed at another location while the woman dumped in Port Melbourne was certainly killed elsewhere.

But there’s nothing to suggest the two deaths are connected, he said.

“You might think well OK, two women in two days in the Melbourne metropolitan area dumped in suspicious circumstances, but at this stage, we can’t establish a link and clearly, we’re looking further,” he said on Wednesday.

Ms Bell, who was known to police, was found with injuries to her face and with her clothes in disarray, said Det Insp Potter.

A post mortem to establish a cause of death was inconclusive and police are awaiting the results of toxicology tests, he said.

He said police were looking at her occupation as part of their inquiries but would not reveal what her occupation was.
