Democrats hail landmark Supreme Court healthcare decision

Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski said the Supreme Court’s ruling proved that
the American legal system works.

“We will now be able to go forward with making sure that 32 million
people have universal access,” said Senator Mikulski.

“We’ve broken the stranglehold of insurance companies, where pinstriped
guys sitting in their boardrooms decided who got health care.”

The Affordable Healthcare Act of 2012 is a sprawling piece of legislation and
the centrepiece of Obama’s domestic policy.

The law seeks to repair elements of the US healthcare system, in which the
cost of drugs and medical treatment is significantly greater than in the EU
and which leaves hundreds of thousands of low-income individuals with less
access to medical care.
