If you’re a sports star, you have to be an odd bird to earn the nickname “The Worm.” That doesn’t even begin to explain Dennis Rodman, though. The former NBA star, whose insane hijinks have earned him no small share of notoriety, is back in North Korea with his BFF Kim Jong Un and his regime.
He didn’t just bring his own strange self, though. According to CNN, Rodman brought along a copy of President Donald Trump’s book “The Art of the Deal” as a gift for North Korean Sports Minister Kim Il Guk.
Yes, that’s right. Dennis Rodman went to North Korea as an American and, while there, gave government officials a Donald Trump-themed gift. Meanwhile, the North Koreans just returned an imprisoned student — who allegedly did nothing more than rip down a poster — in a coma. (There does not appear to be a connection between the release of Otto Warmbier and Rodman’s four-day visit, according to CNN.)
Is this man crazy? All signs point to yes. Yet, The Washington Post actually called it a “genius move.”
“Trump and Rodman know each other — the former NBA player was on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ — and Kim hosted Rodman in North Korea several times in 2013 and 2014. Rodman has called Kim a ‘friend for life’ and tweeted that Trump ‘has been a great friend for many years,’” the paper noted.
“That makes the NBA hall of famer a link between Kim and Trump — and has provoked speculation that Rodman has gone to North Korea as a kind of emissary for the president. The State Department has strongly denied that Rodman’s trip is anything other than a private one.”
Probably for the good reason that it is. Donald Trump may be an unconventional president, but there’s no indication he would be so unconventional as to use a former NBA player of dubious sanity as a go-between with America’s most dangerous enemy.
That’s a bit far outside the box even for him. This means, clearly that Rodman decided to give the North Koreans the book on his own.
Say what you will about Rodman, but at least he’s never predictable.
