Deputy FM: Iran prepared for US possible withdrawal from N. deal

FNA- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi warned of Washington’s attempts to retreat from its undertakings based on the 2015 nuclear deal, stressing Tehran’s readiness for all scenarios.

“The international community may arrive to the conclusion that in the next few days that the US will withdraw from the nuclear deal. The international community should be prepared for this stage,” Araqchi said, addressing the International Conference on Regional Security Order in the West Asia in Tehran on Monday.

“The US moves are in line with annihilation of the nuclear deal. We, in Iran, are ready for any scenario,” he added.

Araqchi warned of the damages that will be inflicted on the international community and the region by the collapse of the nuclear deal, saying, “Our region will not turn into a safer region without the nuclear deal.”

US President Donald Trump faces several deadline-driven decisions this week that will determine whether the US remains within the Iran nuclear deal. But a flurry of action on Capitol Hill may put the president off of any dramatic actions, for now.

Beginning on Friday, Trump must sign, or not sign, a series of waivers on the implementation of nuclear sanctions lifted by the US under the nuclear accord. Failure to sign those waivers – renewed every 120 days – would automatically reimpose sanctions on Iran and those conducting business with it overseas, effectively withdrawing Washington from the deal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned in September that his country may quit the 2015 nuclear deal with the Group 5+1 Group (the US, Russia, China, France and Britain plus Germany) if the US leaves the agreement.

“If Washington decides to pull out of the deal, Iran has the option of withdrawal and other options,” Zarif said.

The Iranian foreign minister, however, said that if the US stays committed to the nuclear agreement, they will have a better position.

Zarif reiterated that in addition to abandoning the deal, Iran has numerous other options to undertake if US quit the deal.
