Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands (Reign 1980-2013) In 2013, after 33 years Beatrix abdicated in favor of her eldest son, Willem-Alexander. At the time of her abdication at age 75, Beatrix was the oldest reigning monarch of the Netherlands in the country’s history.  

King Willem-Alexander (born 1967) is now the King of the Netherlands and is the oldest child of Beatrix. He became Prince of Orange as heir apparent upon his mother’s accession on 30 April 1980, and succeeded his mother following her abdication in 2013.

1600s Sir Robert Filmer was an English political theorist who defended the divine right of kings.

1603 Queen Elizabeth I used the Divine Right of Kings, perhaps because she needed to assert her legitimacy to her councillors and her public, but many felt Elizabeth did not have the right to rule, being that she was the daughter of Anne Boleyn, been executed for treason. Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Duke of Norfolk were implicated in plots to overthrow her, and renounce the divinity of a rightly ordained monarch.

1597 First appearance of DIVINE RIGHT – The Scots textbooks of the divine right of kings were written by James VI of Scotland before his accession to the English throne and claimed that a king “acknowledge himself ordained for his people, having received from the God a burden of government, whereof he must be countable”.

1679 Locke’s good friend the Earl of Shaftesbury was tried for treason, but was acquitted. The Earl decided to flee England anyway to escape further persecution and fled to Holland where William and Mary ruled but had some claim to the English throne.

1683 Locke owing to his close association with Earl, also fled to Holland but returned to England in 1688 when William & Mary were invited to retake the reign of England.
