Donald Trump has tweeted about “meeting with the NRA… about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or no fly list, to buy guns.”

This admission that the National Rifle Association (NRA), and not our congressmen and senators, are in charge of how gun law in this country are handled is unfortunately correct.

The damage this lobby group has done is evident in a 5 year old report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) which outlined how it is not illegal for people on the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) consolidated terrorist watch list (CTW) to buy a firearm from a gun store; including semiautomatic guns and/or assault rifles.

And all thanks to the NRA.

The GAO discovered that between 2004 and 2014, 2,233 attempts to purchase guns by suspected terrorists from American gun dealers. And 91% of the time, the terrorists were successful; which translates to 2,043 guns.

To date there are an estimated 700,000 people on the CTW.

In 2007, then Attorney General Alberto Gonzales influenced members of congress to introduce bill to stop terrorists from purchasing guns legally in the US. Gonzales was not successful.

And last year, Senator Dianne Feinstein and Congressman Peter King attempted to pick up where Gonzales left off with the bill called Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2015, which would have made it impossible for suspected terrorists to purchase guns. This legislation included a provision for anyone accidentally placed on the CTW to challenge their status.

However, when it came time for the proposal to be considered, the NRA and its lobbyists in Washington, DC objected to the bill , saying that it was directed “primarily at law-abiding American gun owners,” that “prohibiting the possession of firearms doesn’t stop criminals from illegally acquiring them,” and that the bills were “sponsored by gun control extremists.”

Libertarians spoke out alongside the NRA to denounce the CTW as possibly being inflated to include “family members, acquaintances or people only marginally acquainted with individuals who actually belong to terror groups.”
