McDonalds announced earlier this year that they would not purchase chicken from farmers who used antibiotics to bolster their poultry.

The fast-food giant said: “We are committing to use chicken that is not raised with antibiotics important to human medicine. McDonald’s has been working closely with farmers for years to reduce the use of antibiotics in our supply, thus we are able to commit today to stop using antibiotics important to human medicine in chicken production for McDonald’s USA by March 2017.”

However, those claims might not actually come to fruition.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2014 sales of antibiotics for livestock are on an upswing, despite claims from farms that they have drastically cut back on the use of drugs in chickens, pigs and cattle.

Antibiotics are traditionally used for:

• Preventing disease
• Treating the sick
• Causing livestock to grow bigger

Simultaneously, sales for antibiotics used for human health has risen by 3% for the years 2013 and 2014.

Avinash Kar, senior attorney with the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) warns : “Dangerous overuse of antibiotics by the agricultural industry has been on the rise at an alarming rate in recent years, putting the effectiveness of our life-saving drugs in jeopardy for people when they get sick.”

Concurring with Kar is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who indicate that because of an increase use of antibiotics will cause untold harm because of the mutation of resistant superbugs. These bacteria affect nearly 2 million Americans annually and are responsible for 23,000 deaths.

Last month scientists in China discovered a new strain of E.coli that can strengthen other E.coli bacteria while being impervious to antibiotics itself. The superbug traveled from the pig, to the raw meat and finally being detected in “a small number of people”.
