Drunk Dallas Cop Left Walmart With $830 in Unpaid Groceries

A cop in Dallas who reeked of alcohol “strolled” out of a Walmart one day ahead of Thanksgiving with more than $800 of unpaid groceries, police said.

Officer Christopher Hankins, while wearing a Dallas Police Department windbreaker, spent nearly three hours inside a Denton County Walmart before officers from the Northeast Police Department responded to the store for a possible theft at 1:35 a.m. Wednesday, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Hankins, according to police records, sat on a produce cooler for nearly 30 minutes before walking out with 169 items worth about $830.

“Hankins stood up and began pushing the cart out of the exit doors, passing all points of purchase and making no attempts to pay for the groceries,” according to police records obtained by the newspaper.

Hankins told a responding police officer in the parking lot that he didn’t have a receipt for the groceries, but acknowledged that he knew better since he was a police officer. Hankins said he wasn’t paying attention though and walked out because he was worried about his car.

Hankins, whose breath had a strong smell of alcohol, then said he got separated from his girlfriend inside the store and decided to wait for her near an exit. Hankins said he left the Walmart in a panic because he surmised that his Toyota Camry had been stolen.

But police arrested Hankins after his car was found in the parking lot and several Walmart employees told police that the cop didn’t look in duress at all, saying he “strolled” out of the store while pushing the packed cart.

Hankins, 30, has been employed by the department since 2014. He’s now facing a misdemeanor theft charge and has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation, police said.
