Egypt regrets US veto to block resolution against move of US Embassy to Jerusalem

nsnbc : Egypt has expressed its regret over the United States veto that had resulted in the UN Security Council’s failure to pass a resolution aimed to move US President Donald Trump to rescind his decision to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The draft resolution on the matter was filed to the UN Security Council (UNSC) by Egypt on behalf of the Arab States. The United States was the only Security Council member to vote against the resolution in Monday’s voting session. All 14 other members, including permanent UNSC members China, Russia, UK and France, voted in favor of the draft resolution.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abou Zaid expressed Egypt’s sorrow at the UN failure to pass the resolution. Zaid said the draft was suggested in response to “the conscience of the international community”.  He added that the international community explicitly rejected Trump’s declaration.

“It is rather concerning when the UN security council fails to adopt a resolution that goes in line with its previous stances regarding the legal situation of the occupied city of Jerusalem,” Abou Zaid added.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that Egypt, as the Arab member of the Security Council, took immediate action in the Council following multiple meetings and coordination with other states. The coordination included reaching a balanced wording of the draft resolution that maintains the legal situation of Jerusalem.

Abou Zaid concluded his statement saying that the Arab group is to meet again to decide on the next steps. Earlier this month, the US was the first country to declare Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, a decision that was widely rejected in the international community and sparked protests in several Arab countries including Palestine, Egypt, and Jordan.

It is worth noting that Egypt, over the past years, repeatedly stressed that the United Nations is failing as badly at protecting the interests of smaller nations as the League of Nations failed at protecting smaller nations from the catastrophic consequences of the last World War between major powers. The fact that the USA, as permanent UNSC member, could veto a resolution against the USA itself is bound to further discredit the UN a viable forum for “the international community”.
