TCP : The South Cairo prosecutor referred Sunday a policeman accused of killing a civilian after a brawl to criminal court on charges of attempted murder, Youm7 reported.

During the investigations carried out by the prosecution in the past few days, the defendant confessed to having killed a pickup truck driver after dispute over transport fare. The policeman said that he hired the pickup to transport leather products from downtown Cairo to his shop in Giza’s district of Omranya for 150 EGP ($18.)
By the time they have arrived at the policeman’s shop, the driver asked for extra 30 EGP, the duo verbally and physically clashed with each other before the policeman pulled out his gun and shot the driver, according to Youm7.
The policeman was arrested one day after the incident, then he was referred to prosecution and ordered detained for four days pending investigation.
Following the incident, hundreds of people gathered outside the Cairo security directorate headquarters protesting the death and calling for the arrest of the perpetrator.
Speaking at a press conference Saturday, Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar vowed to bring to justice any policeman, “who abuses his power and violates the rights of the citizens.”
“We are firm in dealing with policemen who discredit the ministry’s image and in enforcing the rule of law without breaching any of the civilians’ right,” said the minister.
In a Friday statement, the Interior Ministry spokesperson Abu Bakr Abdel Karim said that “any policeman who violates the law will be prosecuted. Policemen are not above the law.”
