TCP : Egyptian Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar appointed Saturday a new head of the Homeland Security Service (HSS,) in a significant ministry reshuffle.
The minister demoted the HSS chairperson Salah Hegazy to occupy the position of the minister aide for economic security affairs. He was replaced with his deputy Mahmoud al-Shaarawi, according to a Saturday ministry statement.
Outgoing deputy of the HSS head Nader al-Gamily was demoted to the rank of Alexandria Security Director, and second outgoing deputy Hesham al-Bestawi was appointed as the interior minister’s aide for borders affairs.
The reshuffle comes after tight security measures were taken nationwide following the crash of a Russian plane over Central Sinai Oct. 31; Russia, the UK, and the U.S. stated that the crash was caused by a bomb on board while Egypt has reiterated that it is waiting for the results of investigations.
The HSS was known as the State Security Service prior to its dissolution in March 2011 as a consequence of the January 25 Revolution.
