nsnbc : Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, on Saturday, will personally answer questions put forward by Egyptian youths. The “Ask the President” initiative is being organized by Egypt’s National Youth Conference, aimed to give Egyptian youth a greater stake in the governance and future of the country.

The National Youth Conference (NYC) was launched for the first time in October 2016 when President Al-Sisi declared 2016 “Year of the Youth”.

Following the developments during the so-called Arab Spring in 2011 and subsequent developments, including the usurpation of power by the Islamist administration of Mohamed Morsi, the subsequent people powered military coup, many Egyptian youths felt disenfranchised.

Understandably, many thought their participation in protests that led to the ouster of Mubarak first and Morsi second, entitled them to have a greater say and stake in the policies and the future of the country.

Many were disappointed and bitter the security situation in the country (plus deeply entrenched oligarchical structures) prevented the fulfillment of such aspirations.

Al-Sisi’s initiative to designate 2016 as “Year of the Youth” and this year’s “Ask the President” initiative aim at mitigating the effects of this potentially ticking timebomb. The National Youth Conference, on its Facebook page, announced a new initiative on Saturday. In Saturday’s “Ask the President” session Egyptians will be allowed to directly ask President Al-Sisi questions and announced that he would personally answer.

The answers will be provided during Al-Sisi’s next meeting with Egyptian youth from April 25 to 27 in Ismailia governorate. Anyone was free to ask questions provided that they will state a link to their Facebook or Twitter account and a valid email address. The organizers will present samples from the questions to Al-Sisi who will be answering them.

The organizers of the “Ask the President” initiative and of the conference did not explain how they vet or select the questions they will give to Al-Sisi, or explain whether or not Facebook accounts, Twitter accounts, names and email addresses of those who submitted questions would be registered and who would or would not have access to this personal information.
