EU Lifts Ban on Fish from Sri Lanka Considers Ban on Fish from Taiwan

nsnbc : Exports of fish from Sri Lanka to the European Union resumed on Friday, after the EU lifter its ban on fishery products from the country. Meanwhile the EU threatens Taiwan with a ban over illegal fishing practices.

Sri Lanka_FishThe first consignment of fish to be exported to the European Union was “ceremonially” handed over to the European Union Ambassador to Sri Lanka, David Daly, on Friday. Ambassador Daly witnessed the ceremony at the Dikovita Fisheries Harbor.

The first consignment was readied for shipping one day after the EU, on June 16, lifted its import ban. The consignment was handed over to exporters by Sri Lanka’s Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry Secretary Mangalika Adhikari and Ambassador Daly.

Mangalika Adhikari told the press that Sri Lanka’s earnings from fish exports dwindled from euro 73 million to 9 million as a result of the EU’s ban. She appealed to the fishing community and the exporters not to allow this opportunity to be lost again.

Meanwhile, the European Union continues to pressure Taiwan over the illegal practices of Taiwan’s fishing industry. The EU threatened to ban import of fish from Taiwan unless the government in Taipei implements immediate measures to bring its rogue fishing industry under control. Illegal practices include, among others, shark finning.

That is, the catching of sharks merely for their fins. Fin-amputated sharks are then often thrown overboard and discarded, while others count on catching additional sharks by throwing the injured animal into the water.
