In France, the National Assembly recently passed a law requiring all models applying for work to provide a medical statement or certificate that proves they are healthy and their body mass index (BMI) is appropriate for their height, age, and body shape.

The average BMI for French women is 23.2; normal BMI is considered somewhere between 18.5 and 24.9.

Several French MPs did not want the BMI clause included in the bill. The compromise came when it was decided by medical professionals whether or not a model was too thin

Previous versions of the bill included mentions of anorexia and bulimia; as well as excessive thinness being punishable by a maximum of 1 year imprisonment.

Repercussions for failing to adhere to this new law are strict. For example, an employer who breaks it could land themselves in prison for up to six months and pay a fine of € 75,000.

Commercial photography of models that are digitally enhanced using programs such as Photoshop must mentioned that they are “retouched”. Those who fail to comply could be fined upwards of €37,500 or 30% of the value of the advertisement featuring the model in question.

Opponents to the law are centered within the fashion industry itself.

Oliver Véran, a neurologist, is “hoping that, with this legislation, we can put an end to what the British call ‘anorexia chic’.”

Véran continued: “It’s not a war against slimness, but a war against malnutrition and the pressure that models are put under. I’m proud that France had taken legal steps to regulate the modeling industry, and hope other countries would follow suit. The new requirements would also apply to international models wishing to walk the runway in France.”
