Facebook’s privacy lie: Aussie exposes ‘tracking’ as new patent uncovered

Facebook has been caught telling porkies by an Australian technologist whose revelations that the site tracks its 800 million users even when they are logged out have embroiled Facebook in a global public policy – and legal – nightmare.

Facebook’s assurances that “we have no interest in tracking people” have been laid bare by a new Facebook patent, dated this month, that describes a method “for tracking information about the activities of users of a social networking system while on another domain”.

Nik Cubrilovic’s blog post, which revealed that tracking cookies monitor Facebook users whenever they surf websites with a Facebook ‘like’ button, has led to political outrage in the US and Europe.

  1. So if they have no interest in tracking us they should also have no interest in the patent. Mark will you please assign that patent to me right away?

  2. Zuckerbergs a pile of dog squeeze.

  3. The ILLUMINATI=THE NEPHILIM BLOODLINES,have for centurys figured out ways to imprison us so we dont even know we are imprisoned. They put a piece of candy out there and tie a string on it and pull it a little each time we reach down to try and pick it up.Face book was created I think as a pool of information that they can draw from,a way to see whos up to what .whos who? For that matter this forum is probably going to be used also. A pool of people that the ILLUMINATI=THE NEPHILIM will have to draw from when they come gunning for us,ever thought about that? 4. I think they can’t track us all. Even my PC is overloaded with cookies and my memory can’t take it within a week. They need a super computer to spy on everybody. I might be wrong, but we haven’t lost yet.

  5. No guys, remember what Alex says on his shows “We are going to use their own media propaganda system against them”. Spread the word and use their own system against them, even if you don’t like social media.

  6. Technologically labadomized and caught up in the Matrix. Yes, it’s true, You Can’t Fix Stupid.

  7. And even after all the controversies over Facebook, stupid people continue to use it. More power to Facebook then if people are that damned dumb.

  8. I smell lawyers licking their chops. When there’s money to be made not even Facebook is immune.

Class action suit … say $1000.00 a person times 800 million people .. do the math. Yeah baby!

click on my name for others that should be sued into oblivion

  9. The U.S. Government is nothing but a bunch of lying cocksuckers……..that need to be put down.

    • Dear Nazi Hunter: We are living on the same planet with a lying, half-breed, two faced… admitted cock sucker (nObama) and you expect “what else” from him and his minions???

The article that gave credence to Rahm (hum job) Emanuels’ daddy blowing up busses for Isreal should have brought this nation to their collective feet… what happened??? Nothing.

I personally do not believe that we can save this country from the ravages of the scum sucking bottom dwelling perverts in D.C. If you have a solution, please share with us. If you can define a “real” leader… please show him or her to us.

  10. Yep, use only Firefox and download “No Script” add in! I block EVERYTHING FaceBook and Google related. You can “temporarily” enable them if need be on certain sites that absolutely require them to function (there is NO reason ANY site needs these peons code from Google and FB – but some programmers are too lazy to do things themselves).

    • Alright. A few things should be touched on here. The comments left thus far lack taste and intelligent reasoning. In fact most of the opinions are seemingly based highly upon predisposed bias, an not on personal education. That seems to be a slap in the face of Alex Jones and what I feel he aims to accomplish on infowars. To get people to ask questions, Find The Truth, and fight for what we personally believe is right.

This being said, as a community, we need to revise our approach heavily and try to educate ourselves far more thoroughly. I’ll take it upon myself to start; to provide a brief overview of internet privacy and the reasons for “tracking cookies”.

First if you are concerned, download Firefox with the add-on no-script like 4wardlight said earlier, but also grab the add-on ghostery. While you’re at it, for all privacy concerned denizens of the internet, download the add-on https everywhere, assuming it works with your current version. No script defaults to blocking any form of script from running in your browser. So even if you get a cookie, so long as you don’t enable a domain, the script within is limited. Ghostery will give you an idea of every site that your current webpage is talking with. https everywhere helps give you a secure connection with a number of other sites. In fact now, I might even recommend the convergence add-on.

I promise I am truly trying to be brief and accurate here.

There seems to be a gross misunderstanding of the ‘assumed’ purpose of a tracking cookie. It serves the purpose of having a website and its advertiser to hold each other accountable. It isn’t in existance for the sake of finding out where you live or what kind of porn you look at. (at least not all of them). There is a tremendous ignorance in this room where people don’t understand that google IS an incredibly powerful search engine. What goes hand in hand with that model is that it is good at data mining and information collection. Now is not the point to start getting paranoid. This is the point to realize that, this skillset is incredibly valuable to advertisers, and advertisers want this kind of information so that they can better target their arguments. THIS IS google’s business model.

Facebook is trying to do the same thing. They need to be able to keep their business afloat while combating Google +. Has anyone here heard of a patent troll? It’s a scumbag corporation that doesn’t do anything or implement their ideas, they just buy patents to either 1) keep other companies from growing(if it is a competitor) or 2) SUE THE LIVING HELL out of anyone and everyone they can; because suing a corporation is incredibly profitable. This is what we should assume is the purpose behind facebook’s new patent.

NOW, with this understanding, we should go out and find out whether or not Facebook is doing something more nefarious with their tracking cookies.

      • Been using Firefox with Ghostery, No Script, Track Me Not (TMN), Web of Trust (WOT). I really luv Firefox and these Add-ons. As for Facebook, I don’t do any Social chat sites, glad I never have. It’s bad enough that my e-mail is probably being read by some computer program. I don’t use cell-phones or have an iPod, either. I guess I’m just old-fashioned, heh-heh.

  11. This really doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me. They (gov, online social platforms, cell phones companies) have been tracking everyone for a long while now. However, I would love to see some lawsuits gain some ground here and take a chunk out of their profits so maybe they won’t be so brazen about their indiscretions in the future. It’s too bad that the internet is fast becoming a tool for the bad-guys when it has so many good qualities.
